Mia Kun
RIT Croatia, Class of 2017
Hospitality and Service Management (IHSM)
Employment: Hilton
Job title: Cluster Revenue Manager
Mia, tell us a bit about yourself and your RIT Croatia experience.
My
name is Mia Kun and I graduated in 2017 from International Hospitality and
Service Management. I loved the program as it gave us an insight on how the
industry works, we learned to co-operate and think as a team, whilst also
working on our own, and lectures were interactive, which helped understand the
subject better.
Where did your path lead you next, and finally where are you now and what are you working on?
After graduation I worked 1 year as a Reservations Intern and London Hilton on Park Lane, then I applied for Hilton’s first ever EDGE graduate program for Revenue Management. I’ve completed the 18 months training in March 2020, just before COVID-19 hit the industry.
In
the meantime I finished a Creative Writing course and published my first Young
Adult novel back in 2018 in Hungarian, and now I’m publishing in English as
well.
How important is career-oriented education and gaining work experience prior to getting a job (co-ops and internships during your studies)?
For
me cooperative education and mandatory internships helped a lot in shaping me
into the person I’ve become. I didn’t really know at first what I wanted to do
once I graduate so being able to experience different industries and make up my
mind before graduation give me a head start in building my career.
What advice do you have in one adapting to changes all around us – personally and professionally?
Most
importantly we need to keep an open mind and be adaptable to changes. Our world
is a fast paced one and we need to be able to keep up with everything going on.
Be flexible in your approach to things and always look for alternative
solutions.
How important is quality education in dealing with unexpected and challenging times? How has RIT Croatia specifically prepared you for this?
Education
is the key to prepare us for the future. For me RIT Croatia gave me all the
tools to be prepared for the outside world. I believe that RIT Croatia builds a
curriculum where students are exposed and tested in various environments,
contrary to some other universities where they take only oral and written
exams. Being in a more engaging and proactive environment helped me be more
open minded and always be ready for something new.
What is your message to our current and potential students?
Always follow your dreams, even if no one believes in you. I learnt that at RIT.
