RIT Croatia Dubrovnik campus recently had the honor of hosting senior representatives from the Disney Cruise Line (DCL) on April 5th, 2023. Ms. Melissa Greco Dailey, the Senior Manager of DCL Recruitment, and Ms. Kim Naude, the Senior Recruiter, visited the campus to meet with students and discuss exciting career opportunities within the company.
One of the more popular events and student-related activities is our Dean’s List Dinner which we once a semester organize to celebrate the academic achievements of our students. The celebratory dinners were organized in Zagreb on March 21, and Dubrovnik on March 2, and gathered students and faculty members.
In cooperation with Adriatic Luxury Hotels, the leader in the segment of luxury hotel business in Croatia, RIT Croatia is organizing a competition in which the five best candidates will be rewarded with valuable scholarships for RIT's Hospitality and Tourism Management BS program. The winner of the competition wins a full scholarship of 27,200 euros. Applications are open until April 11, and the scholarship winners will be announced on May 5, 2023.
23rd Career Education Days took place on our campuses last week from Wednesday, March 15 – Friday March 17. With the topic of “Technology and the future of work: Which way will we go?” the first two days took place online in form of various panels, workshops and presentations. The last day was organized as a live event on both campuses enabling students to network with employers.

After successfully leading RIT Croatia for 25 years, President and Dean Don Hudspeth has announced his retirement. President Hudspeth was one of the key people responsible for the establishment, development and growth of RIT Croatia, formerly known as the American College of Management and Technology (ACMT).
In order to provide excellent students with more opportunities to advance their knowledge and skills, RIT Croatia launched its Honors program in the fall semester 2022. Eligible students applied and had worked hard exploring topics within a course they were taking, that was offered within this program.

RIT has always been a synonym for creativity, innovation, tech and the future; after all, the university signature event is the popular Imagine RIT festival that celebrates those very traits. The festival brings RIT closer to its local community as masses from Rochester area come to the campus each spring to witness creative and innovative work and ideas of RIT students, faculty and staff.

Martin Žagar participated in panel discussions at Game Changer, the first gaming and metaverse business conference held at Z center in Zagreb on December 1st, 2022. The conference gathered 80 different speakers and 750 accredited participants, including IT professionals, start-up founders, students, and gaming lovers, in 25 panels on topics like gaming, web 3, e-commerce, cyber security, and more.

Namely, Ms. Senka Daniel, Head of Division for European Affairs and Policies, Ms. Vlasta Klarić, President of the National Partnership for Cultural Tourism and Ms. Iva Čaleta Pleša, Senior Expert Advisor, Division for European Affairs and Policies, conducted a lecture followed by a workshop on the topic of “EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR) – Sustainable Tourism”. Ministry of Tourism and Sports is thus celebrating the European Youth year and this workshop is a part of the promotion of the EUSAIR strategy and youth cooperation.

Bundek Centar in Zagreb has another breakfast & brunch place, which has just been launched by our alum Sven Kovačević. Sven is a Swedish born who started his Croatian adventure some 10 years ago. Fast forward to today, Sven earned his BS degree in International Business at our Zagreb campus, discovered that he liked Croatia so much that he would actually start his own business here, with his business and life partner, Melanie Goldfinger (also our alumna ☺)

as people slowly start to discuss where they will spend the upcoming winter holidays, on RIT Croatia campuses we are working diligently. Why? Because the biggest RIT Croatia event is happening this week.
On November 15, RIT Croatia hosted a workshop for high school and university students from Dubrovnik on the topic “One Day at the Event Lab: How to Successfully Organize an Event?”. The workshop was held by RIT Croatia Alumni, Anđela and Ksenija Matić, owners of the Event Lab agency and experienced event creators with a reputable knowledge in broad areas of event management industry.
In order to build positive perception about Mathematics, Croatian Mathematical Society organizes Evening of Mathematics (Večer matematike) events on an annual basis. Each year the Math evening takes place in kindergartens, schools and colleges throughout Croatia in a form of interactive and fun workshops.
Dora Rašin was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, by parents who are of Croatian origin. Three years ago, she relocated to Croatia to enroll at RIT Croatia. RIT Croatia opened its first campus 25 years ago in Dubrovnik, being the first global campus of the prominent American university, Rochester Institute of Technology from New York, USA. By doing this, they opened the doors to both private higher education in Croatia, and to the first U.S. college in Croatia. More than 2,800 students have graduated from both Dubrovnik and Zagreb campuses, and are now developing their careers and setting trends in more than 40 countries worldwide.
On the 7th of November, 2022, RIT Croatia’s professors, Dr. Maja Vidović and Dr. Peter Schmidt, together with International Business student Andrea Danić, participated in the panel discussion on the topic “What should professors do to be good professors.” This panel was part of the Education at a Turning Point Conference, organized by srednja.hr, the most relevant online news media for college and high school students.

High school graduates from the class of 2022 have taken a leap into higher education through RIT’s inaugural Post-High School Semester in Europe. The program has provided these students the opportunity to spend a semester at RIT’s campus in Dubrovnik, Croatia, taking three classes, conducting research, and enjoying experiential learning trips throughout Croatia and in Rome, Italy.
With the purpose to provide excellent students with opportunities to advance their knowledge in a particular course, RIT Croatia launched its Honors Program this fall.
During the week of celebration activities of our 25th anniversary, RIT Croatia recognized our alumni with the Alumni Recognition Awards: Niko Katušić (Class of 2019), Ana Lukić (Class of 2010), and Tana Zimmermann (Class of 2009). Niko has been selected for the Early Achievement award for successfully finishing P&G Management Training Program and being chosen for a promotion in the Brand and Marketing Management Program, a position that until this point in time did not exist in this region. Ana has been chosen for the Distinguished Alumni Award for her work as a crisis response planner within EU Commission, and Tana has been selected for the Notable Alumni Award for the impressive results of her company Bazzar.hr.
On Monday, September 19, 2022, RIT Croatia has officially marked the 25th anniversary of operating in Croatia with a formal celebration in Dubrovnik. Over 120 esteemed guests from the Ministry, the City of Dubrovnik, Dubrovnik-Neretva County, business partners, alumni representatives, former and present faculty and staff, and media representatives were present at the celebration in the prominent setting of Marin Držić Theater in the old town of Dubrovnik.

The BEE Club is back! The Business Environment Exploration Club, or BEE Club for short, was first founded in 2017 by International Business students Donika Kristaj and Azra Hodo, who were in search of business opportunities for themselves and their fellow peers. Thus, the club aims for students to develop their professional networks and learn about company culture through an annual business trip at the end of the school year.

In order to celebrate 20 years of its existence and operation, the Council of Polytechnics and Colleges in Croatia held a ceremonial session in the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb, on May 13, 2022.
Friday May 13th in Zagreb and Saturday May 14th in Dubrovnik were two very special days when all the faculty and staff joined the senior students in celebrating their four year achievement at the Commencement Ceremonies. We had over 190 students in both campuses that walked the stage and were able to share their special day with their families and friends.
Senior capstone project is the crown of education at RIT Croatia for graduating students of the Hospitality and Tourism Management program. Senior year students choose topics based on their own interests, which gives them the opportunity to tackle anything they find interesting and worth exploring. Creating a successful senior capstone project is a complex process which requires a lot of maturing along the way, a lot of problem solving, researching and, above all, a good and firm connection with the faculty member mentoring the whole process.

As part of RIT Croatia’s celebration of its 25th anniversary, the college organized a creativity competition for its students. Students were invited to produce a video, an image, or a text on the topic of celebrating 25 years of RIT Croatia.
The winner of the 2022 ICHRIE Hotel Challenge by Knowledge Matters, a virtual hotel simulation employed to test students on their management skills, is one of our own – HTM student Angel K. Hristov! Honorable mention goes to Ana Žaja, Filip Stanišić, and Ante Cvitković who also participated in the competition!
RIT Croatia President and Dean Don Hudspeth recently sat down for an interview with Bob Finnerty, RIT’s associate vice president of communications. Hudspeth discussed a variety of issues, from his vision for RIT Croatia to its strategic location in Europe. RIT Croatia, the oldest of RIT’s global campuses, is also celebrating its 25th anniversary. It has two locations: the Adriatic coastal city of Dubrovnik and Zagreb, the capital city.

We have had the pleasure of welcoming RIT’s top people in Marketing & Communication to both of our campuses in late March. The main purpose of the visit was (finally) to meet some of the team members in person, but also to discuss our overall marketing & communication efforts and share our best practices. As part of a 25th anniversary celebration, Francis Domoy — “A founder of RIT Croatia” — was honored April 1 as a recipient of the RIT Croatia Distinguished Service Award.
Francis Domoy, the longtime leader of RIT’s hospitality and service management program, vividly recalls having a conversation with RIT President Al Simone in 1995 about a potential opportunity to do something special in Croatia. The U.S Department of State was in talks with Croatia, which was looking for ways to partner and rebuild after its War of Independence and break away from the former Yugoslavia.
For almost 50 years, RIT has been honoring the top 1% of its students who not only excel academically, but through other factors in addition to academic achievement (creative work, service on student committees, civic activities, employment, and independent research). Each year, that top 1% of all RIT students includes students from RIT Croatia.

With the aim to raise awareness about financial literacy and stock trading, students of RIT Dubai's Finance club organized RIT’s First Inter-Campus Trading Competition with success! The competition took place for seven weeks, from October 20, 2021 to December 5, 2021, during which students of RIT campuses in Dubai, Rochester and Croatia invested virtual money in different classes of securities like stocks, bonds, options, futures cryptos, and Forex. Grouped in teams of 2-4 members, students competed using the Stock Trak real-time trading platform which allowed them to invest and manage a virtual portfolio.

The First semester started off strongly for the first year students of the HTM program. Within their Business I course, taught by Milena Kužnin, they were emerged into real life problem solving from day one. The Business I course is designed to cover key functional areas of doing business, estimates of new business opportunities, and how to create and implement a business plan. One of the key assignments in this course was for students to team up, create and develop a new business idea throughout the semester, which culminates with teams presenting the outcome to the judges through an “elevator pitch” – a quick, catching and efficient presentation of the idea.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we live making it both easier and more difficult at the same time. Namely, a lot of our everyday activities are now conducted remotely. Working and studying remotely has its advantages and disadvantages, one of which is connected to evaluation of students’ knowledge via exams and tests executed remotely using online platforms.
A lot of times when we talk about American education in Croatia, the conversation revolves around Croatian students adjusting to the US higher ed standards and system. However, more and more international students come to study here. Earning an accredited American university degree in a beautiful country like Croatia is appealing to students from all over the world, even from far destinations like Bolivia, or New Zealand!
RIT University and all of its campuses organize a Student Government Consortium every year so that all of the Student Government teams have the opportunity to meet, learn from each other and get inspired for the ongoing academic year. Prior to the pandemic, the consortium was a live event and each year one of the campuses hosted everyone for a few days of teambuilding.

One of the most challenging aspects of life as an RIT Croatia student can be adapting to our all-English learning environment. For most students, it’s the first time they have been asked to read, write, speak and even think in a foreign language, every day. While all our students have studied English for many years in school, they quickly discover that there is a big difference between studying a language as a school subject two or three hours per week, and actually using that language to study and communicate every day.
On November 29, 2021 five ESD Croatia students attended the Virtual ESD Conference organized by ICHRIE’s Eta Sigma Delta hospitality honorary society. This conference is the first in a series of planned virtual conferences to be delivered monthly during the academic year 2021/2022.
This two-hour virtual conference focused on the topic of continuing studies with three schools sharing their graduate options: Technological University Dublin, University of Delaware and University of North Texas.
As part of the popular event “Večer matematike” (Mathematics Evening) held in kindergartens, schools and colleges throughout Croatia, online workshops will be organized by RIT Croatia as well. The workshops will be held on December 2 by our faculty, Dr Kristina Šorić and Dr Kristijan Tabak. The workshops are intended for high school and university students interested in the application of mathematics in business. The Luxury Service Excellence class, led by HTM faculty member Domagoj Nikolić, paid a visit to the luxury Hotel Excelsior in Dubrovnik, where they were hosted by our HTM alumnus Mr. Ivor Vlašić, who is a General Manager of the hotel, and Mr. Tino Kaminski, Guest Experience Manager.
As December rolls around and our faculty staff and students are getting ready to wrap up another (successful!) semester, our Student Government brings the annual Charity Auction to the whole RIT Croatia community. This event is near and dear to us all, one which brings us all together and shows the spirit of our community as we raise money for those in need. A tradition spanning over 20 years has lived on even in these difficult times, simply in a transformed format through the Silent and Live Auctions held online as a joint event of both Dubrovnik and Zagreb campuses.
During September and October, HTM first year students, who took the Hospitality in Tourism Management Fundamentals course taught by Dr. Besim Agušaj, had an amazing opportunity to be virtually connected with Hospitality students from Washington State University in a series of guest lectures. The idea behind this collaboration was to bring students together and expose them to top industry professionals who gave them insight into current hospitality trends and developments.

RIT Croatia took part at the first EXPO Smotra in Dubrovnik from October 18-19, 2021, organized by Centar za karijere mladih Dubrovnik.
A strong team of 10 student volunteers from Dubrovnik campus, accompanied by admission specialists from both campuses, proudly represented our programs and to high school students from Dubrovnik region, Split region, as well as from BiH and Montenegro.
Two of our senior WMC students, Dora Beronić and Dino Muharemagić, in collaboration with RIT Croatia alumni Paula Pufek and Matija Šipek and under the mentorship of Dr. Branko Mihaljević and Aleksander Radovan, wrote two research papers and presented them at the 44th International Convention on Information and Communication Technology, Electronics, and Microelectronics – MIPRO 2021.
On Saturday, September 25, Milena Kužnin, a faculty member at RIT Croatia’s Hospitality and Tourism Management program, held an interesting lecture on the topic “Emotional Intelligence (EI) – Why is it important and how to develop it” in Kulturni Centar Jadran in Dubrovnik.
The guest lecture came up as a result of collaboration between Milena Kužnin and Ivana Tepšić, an RIT Alumna who is one of the founders of Kulturni Centar Jadran in Dubrovnik.
On Saturday, September 18, students and faculty members at the Dubrovnik campus united their forces to mark the World Cleanup Day 2021 by organizing and executing a cleanup action of the area surrounding our campus.

We had our freshmen orientation in both our Dubrovnik and Zagreb campuses, and welcomed our 25th generation of new students. These students will graduate in 2025, which is also really neat!
There is something intriguing and capturing about people who manage to have it all, a well-rounded and successful business career and a continuous dedication to other passions in their lives that might not necessarily have to do anything with their line of business. One of those people is Periša Boko, RIT Croatia Alumnus. He manages to successfully juggle a serious role in a travel company and his passion for music and singing.

Gaining relevant work experience during college is more than putting knowledge into practice. Aside from learning what it really looks like to work in an industry on real-life business cases, students get a chance to see how they like working in a particular industry sector, profession or even organization-type. This further helps them to learn where they see themselves career-wise. At RIT Croatia cooperative education through internships in the chosen field of study is mandatory. Students spend 800 hours of gaining work experience during their studies. This is done by conducting two coops during 4-years of study.

Youth Business Camp Switzerland opens its licensed program Youth Business Camp Adria, which will take place in Zagreb from June 28 to July 9. The Youth Business Camp provides an educational adventure for youth from around the world by teaching various disciplines and business skills.
A university education isn’t only about getting a good job; at RIT Croatia it’s also about becoming a more interesting and cultured person – someone who thinks critically, communicates well, and understands themselves and others.

Although COVID-19 has taken a big toll on how higher education is done worldwide, the freshmen generation at the RIT Croatia’s HTM program in Dubrovnik had a full face-to-face class experience this semester. As part of the Business 2: Business Planning & Professional Development course delivered by Mr. Domagoj Nikolić, a faculty member teaching HTM courses, students were working throughout the semester to develop a full plan of their own innovative business ideas including the Business Description, Marketing Mix, Porter's 5 Forces Analysis, SWOT, Operations and Management Plan, Budget and Budget Narrative, all supported by their own secondary and primary research.
Two of our HTM students, Nera Andrijašević and Dejana Kušić, took part at the Youth Hotelier Summit 2021 which is the largest student-run hospitality summit in the world, organized by students of the Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne.
In the period from March 1st to March 12th, three of their members, Angel Hristov, Tamara Radulović and Filip Stanišić, competed amongst a group of 158 students from all over the world in the ICHRIE Knowledge Matters Hotel Challenge, a virtual hotel simulation employed to test students on their management skills, and all three of them made it to the final top 10 results!
Dr Martin Žagar has been selected as a member (the only one from Croatia and Eastern Europe) of the expert group for the Observatory on the Online Platform Economy, an advisory board of the European Commission that supports the Commission in monitoring the evolution of the online platform economy for evidence-based and problem-focused policy making.

We can experience increased levels of stress and feeling more anxious. Stress can take a significant toll on our overall health, happiness and productivity, and it is important for all of us to learn healthy ways to effectively cope with the stress in our lives.
The article Learning Near-Optimal Broadcasting Intervals in Decentralized Multi-Agent Systems using Online Least-Square Policy Iteration co-authored by our faculty member, Dr Domagoj Tolić, has been published in the prominent journal IET Control Theory & Applications. According to Scopus, this journal is within 84 percentile in five categories being the No.3 ranked journal in Mathematics: Control and Optimization among 101 journals indexed in this category.
Our Hospitality and Tourism Management program has been known for unparalleled hands on approach through experiential learning. An important role in this approach plays the simulation project that is successfully implemented in the Food and Beverage Management class, taught by instructor Domagoj Nikolić.

In line with the current epidemiological measures and recommendations, we have decided to postpone the start of the spring semester classes for one week. The spring semester classes will now start on Monday, January 18th, 2021.
At RIT Croatia, Dr. Marlena Ćukteraš is one of best examples of an instructor whose energy and life work complements her teaching. For the past three years, she has taught Scientific Inquiries in Environmental Science and Ecology of the Dalmatian Coast at RIT Croatia’s Dubrovnik campus, encouraging students to apply what they have learned to the real world around them.
RIT Croatia students raised HRK 22,007 this year at a traditional charity auction. The auction was held in an online environment, and the funds raised will be donated to the SVE za NJU (All for Her) association of women suffering from and treated for cancer
In line with the recent Ministry recommendation issued for all Croatian higher education institutions, effective Monday, November 30th, 2020, we will be moving the majority of classes, as well as the final exams, to an online delivery format. The exception to this will be some lab-based courses and some final exams, which will continue to be held live, in-person, on the campuses.
UFI, the global association of the exhibition industry, has elected its new Board of Directors for the 2020–2023 mandate. One of the elected Directors is Dr. Dina Tomšić, CEO of the Zagreb Fair Ltd and our adjunct faculty member teaching Organizational Effectiveness.

Our Web and Mobile Computing faculty Dr. Martin Žagar and Dr. Alan Mutka won second place at EIT Jumpstarter’s Grand Finals with their idea “Efficient Motion Detection Algorithm for 3D Medical Data” (MMD3D) in the area of EIT Health. They contended with 120 teams selected for this competition. The grand finals took place in an online environment on November 25th, 2020.
December is always quite special at RIT Croatia; not only are Fall semester classes ending (which is followed by the final exams, but that's another story), but our community uses this time to celebrate the holidays in a special way. This is the time when our students organize a charity auction with the aim of raising funds and donating to those who need help and they have been doing that for 20 years!!

The “breweRIT” is a student-driven project focused on producing a supply chain in craft beer production between the USA and Croatia. The USA craft beer industry is incredibly advanced featuring many ingredients that are not available anywhere in Europe. The goal was to introduce these ingredients and knowledge to the Croatian craft beer industry and make Dubrovnik a springboard for similar future projects.

Mrs. Siviglia Berto, sustainability expert, award winning change maker, storyteller and the owner of Passa Porte, from Belgium, held a Zoom guest lecture to all students and faculty members who were interested in the topic of creating sustainable wellbeing & experience journey as well as sustainable development goals and destination sustainability index.
Despite challenges posed by COVID-19 situation, Dr. Ćukteraš found a way to obey all safety measures and still provide her students with the field trip experience that makes all the difference when it comes to actually understanding sustainability.
Croatian pub quiz scene has risen in popularity over the last few years. No matter what interests you in life, having fun over a few drinks in a nice cozy pub, while competing with other teams who came to the quiz for the same reason as you, to have fun, is an amazing experience. Also, we must be honest, people love to compete too, and by allowing them to compete against other people who love to compete and see who is better, that can be really exciting.
In order to bring RIT's programs and courses, delivered at RIT Croatia, closer to our students and potential students, we decided to talk to Ms Milena Kužnin, one of the Hospitality and Tourism Management BS program faculty from Dubrovnik campus. Known for her passion for management and leadership, Ms Kužnin has been teaching our students how to become the leaders that fit the organizational needs today and the future, for 16 years now.

Marija Lončarević and Vedran Belamarić, peers from RIT's Master of Science in Service Leadership and Innovation program, Class of 2020, just recently started a business together. Aside from really cool courses, it was the fun, good vibes and lots of learning from other peers in the cohort that made two years spent in the program seem like two months. In addition to RIT Croatia Freshmen Orientation that took place last week, School of Information from RIT's Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences held an online Global Orientation for its Web and Mobile Computing students in Dubrovnik and Zagreb, Croatia, and Dubai, UAE on Monday, August 31.
Another academic year has started and though we are happy to see our students start and continue to achieve success in their academic lives, a lot of things have changed in just one year. The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone's lives globally and made us adapt to what some call the „new normal“.
Sanja Čović, who graduated from HTM program in 2020, has spent the last semester of her studies at the Rochester campus. Among taking other courses, she also took her senior capstone project, which is considered to be the crown of education at the HTM program. Sanjas’s successful senior capstone project resulted in her collaboration with RIT's Dr. Rick Lagiewski during the spring Covid-19 lock down to develop a case study on the topic “Readiness and Response: The case of hotel emergency management during Hurricanes”.
We are closely monitoring the situation regarding coronavirus (COVID-19) both in Croatia and globally. Locally, we are working with health officials to ensure we are aware of changing conditions and responding effectively. We are also working closely with the Rochester campus to ensure we are in line with existing measures imposed across our global campuses.
RIT Croatia began a collaborative partnership with the Red Hat Academy (https://www.redhat.com/en/services/training/red-hat-academy), an open-source, web-deployed and web-managed education program designed to provide academic institutions, faculty, and students with courseware, training and learning materials, and other resources, related mostly to cloud computing, enterprise software development technologies, and Linux operating system.
Dr. Patekar’s life started out interesting from the very first moment; he was born in New Delhi, India, an exotic place of birth that often surprises his fellow Croatians. Coincidentally, his last name, which comes from the north of Croatia, is also a popular Indian last name (you might want to google Nana Patekar, for example).
Dr. Domagoj Tolić, who is currently teaching WMC/IT courses at RIT Croatia, was granted an ERASMUS+ KA107 project aimed at modeling and analysis of three-dimensional movements of fluid flows, in collaboration with Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY, USA.

Students from the Hospitality and Tourism Management program come a long way from the first day of being introduced to the amazing four-year journey at RIT Croatia. The first semester of the first year is usually somewhat confusing, scary and by all means not easy. As they progress, they mature and acquire new knowledge and skill set that enables them to finish their fourth year on a high note, with having a Senior Capstone Project in their final semester.
The course is delivered by RIT Croatia's faculty member Doc.dr.sc. Martin Žagar: „The course focuses on the development of integrated web applications that consume information served from one or many sources. Students identify and assess trends in web application development and, of course work on programming projects.“
Studying in a total English environment is one of the most attractive benefits of an RIT Croatia education, but it can also be a challenge, especially for the majority of our students who have never experienced an all-English environment before. Even though all of them have had English courses in school since first grade, at RIT Croatia they experience something very different.
Though the Spring semester is long gone, the learning at RIT Croatia does not stop. Our Dubrovnik and Zagreb students have the opportunity to choose online courses led and delivered by the faculty from our main campus in Rochester.

On Saturday, May 6, 2020, RIT Croatia held the virtual conferring of degrees for the Class of 2020. While this celebration was not intended to replace a traditional commencement, it recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of this generation.
As we all know, the current pandemic left no one unaffected – people, businesses all over the world are adapting to, what many refer to as “new normal”. Sure, as measures are easing up (at least in Croatia), we all are trying to adjust to new experiences in primarily service industries. Talking to our students, and alumni, as well as our own circle of friends, one thing everyone noted was the importance of adaptability. One thing we have surely learned is that changes are a constant. And yes, some take time to take root, but others (like the one brought about by COVID-19 pandemic) happened so quickly and impacted our lives.
Now that your academic semester is finished many of you may be searching for co-op opportunities or looking for the ideal position to start your career. While some may know their ideal career path and have charted out an extensive 5-year plan in their head, I'm sure a majority are still trying to figure out which career option, out of the many available to RIT Croatia students, is right for them.
In these challenging, life altering times, we stopped for a moment to especially listen to our graduating students. The generation of 2020 who was deprived of the feeling of closure in their last semester at RIT Croatia. For that reason, we posed a couple of questions to Pamina Benčić, a graduating student at the Hospitality and Tourism Management program in Dubrovnik, the valedictorian of the generation of 2020.
The Celebration of the Class of 2020 is a virtual conferring of degrees. While not intended to replace a traditional commencement, this celebration recognizes and celebrates the accomplishments of the Class of 2020.
On Monday, April 27th, professor Domagoj Nikolić organized a special class for the departing senior students attending his International Resort Management course, the eBoard members from the planned breweRIT project that is postponed due to situation caused by COVID-19 pandemics, and one of our star students Belma Sokolović, who joined the class from Rochester, NY.
With a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and an MBA degree in finance from the University of California at Berkeley, prof. Kevin Walker came with his wife and family to Dubrovnik in 2005 so as to be near his wife’s family. He joined the RIT Croatia family in 2008, teaching at the Dubrovnik campus. With a background in financial markets and equity options trading, and co-founder of a trading firm, he teaches a variety of courses involving accounting, entrepreneurship, and marketing and is currently holding a position of Area Head for the Hospitality and Tourism Management program.
We are witnessing a serious social and economic situation. Health of our loved ones, family and friends is the most important priority at this point. Yet, too often the whole crisis is presented as if this is the end of the world, that we are reaching a point of breaking etc.
On Friday, April 17 HTM students from prof. Besim Agušaj’s class had a joint class with their colleagues from the Rochester campus, taught by prof. Muhammet Kesgin.
As the semester is nearing its end, our International Business program students had an interesting guest lecturer who spoke about career development in sales. In Professional Selling Online Course, taught by our faculty Nina Antičić, the class welcomed Mr. Ivan Grabar from Mars Wrigley who connected from New York, USA to speak to our students. Mr. Grabar has immense professional working experience in sales working for global giant Masterfood, and then Mars, Inc., over the past decades.
We live in a very dynamic time. The world has become one global village. Information is spread at lightning speed. The circumstances in which we live change, not only from day to day, but from hour to hour. And digital technology has certainly contributed to this.
Enrolling into RIT Croatia's IT / Web and Mobile Computing programs enables students not only to prepare for sought-after professions in the areas of programming, web and mobile application design and development, and database modeling, but to work on real business cases and interact with potential employers. Furthermore, students have the possibility to work on student research projects and present their experiences and findings to industry experts. Each year, stellar students present their work at the prominent Javantura conference, held in Croatia.

Two of our IT / WMC students, Matija Šipek and Dino Muharemagić, under the mentorship of Dr. Branko Mihaljević and Aleksander Radovan, wrote a research paper “Enhancing Performance of Cloud-based Software Applications with GraalVM and Quarkus” which got accepted for presentation at the 43rd International Convention on Information and Communication Technology, Electronics, and Microelectronics – MIPRO 2020, which is planned to take place in late September 2020, in Opatija, Croatia.
RIT's Saunders College of Business earned extended accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, the premier accrediting organization for business schools worldwide. Since 2011, RIT Croatia has been running Saunder's International Business undergraduate program which is included in this accreditation, and the Zagreb campus participated in the reaccreditation process.
One of the many benefits of studying at RIT Croatia is being prepared to swift integration on the job market once the student graduates. The possibility to apply the course learning in practice is promoted outside the classroom via mandatory co-op or internship in the field of the chosen program of study. However, hands-on approach is heavily present in the classrooms as students engage in various project that are also subject to grading.
On April 4th, Student Governments of RIT's global campuses organized an event that brought together students from Dubai, Dubrovnik, Kosovo, Rochester and Zagreb for an online edition of a students' favorite event - Pub Quiz.
As I woke up Monday the 23rd for my first day of online classes, I felt refreshed and ready to conquer the day. Up until that moment, I’ll admit, the idea of getting back to work after our extended two-week spring break seemed tiresome. Representatives from 30 companies from Croatia and the region, students and professors attended the 20th Career Education Day in Dubrovnik, taking place on February 26, 2020 in Hotel Dubrovnik Palace.
I met Andrea several years ago. I remember her as one of the top students that were involved in a super interesting experiential cross-campus project called the RITz dinner at RIT. She was polite, humble, service oriented, willing to learn and contribute. She's one of those people that leave their mark on the world.
Organized by Career Office as a part of career preparation month and proudly sponsored by Eta Sigma Delta honorary society, the first Shark Tank competition was held at the Dubrovnik campus on February 19.
It is always a pleasure to welcome back ur Alumni members for whatever purpose we host them at RIT Croatia campuses, and with the same pleasure we hosted Ms. Jelena Stupalo, RIT Croatia Alumna (2004). Ms. Stupalo, who is currently obtaining the position of Director of Tourist Board Solin, presented the program of the 6th international cities congress to be held in Solin from March 23th to 27th, 2020.
As a part of Cultural Heritage class, taught by professor Francis Brassard, students had the chance to listen to a lecture delivered by professor Grant Cos from RIT’s Rochester campus. Professor Cos is the Director of Journalism program at the School of Communication, College of Liberal Arts.
As a part of the WMC guest lecture series at RIT Croatia this week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Mr. Hrvoje Šamija and Mr. Mario Berljafa from Visage Technologies who delivered the lecture titled “Computer Vision at Visage Technologies - From an Algorithm to a Product.“ Topics covered: Advanced Driver-Assistance, Autonomous Driving System (ADAS), Advanced Image Processing, Product development, AI tools.

Croatian language is a challenging language to learn. For international students coming to Croatia to pursue their undergraduate degree, living and studying in a country where you are unfamiliar with the native language can be challenging and frustrating at times. Yet at RIT Croatia, the International Student Club (ISC) run by Emily Arnold, a fourth-year student, provides students the opportunity to learn and better understand the Croatian language.

Choosing a university isn’t easy. So it isn’t surprising that sometimes students enroll in a program that they expect will be interesting and useful, but later discover they made the wrong choice. Sometimes they find out that the subjects they are studying are not for them, or the relationships with professors and learning atmosphere simply isn’t motivating. That’s when transferring to RIT Croatia can be a great solution, and the start of a whole new chapter in their lives.
Friday, 6th of December was another exciting day at RIT Croatia’s Dubrovnik campus. As a part of the Food & Beverage Management class, taught by Prof. Domagoj Nikolić, our sophomore students gave presentations of their semester long projects to industry professionals, Mr. Ivor Vlašić, F&B Sales and Cross-selling Manager at Adriatic Luxury Hotels, who is also one of RIT Croatia Alumni, and Mr. Branimir Boras, Assistant Food Beverage Manager at Sun Gardens Dubrovnik.
The most important aspect of the Eta Sigma Delta honor society (ESD) are the members, who are all representatives of the five pillars that are the fundations of the society (excellence, leadership, creativity, service, ethics). This semester ESD Croatia Chapter had the privilege to accept ten new student members from the Hospitality and Tourism Management program, and one honorary member from the service industry, Mr. Dario Ševelj, Co-owner / CEO, Dubrovnik Beer Company.
Can you imagine what it feels like being 18 or 20 years old and moving to a new country, a new continent to live there? What if the culture you moved to was completely different from what you're used to? Well, Emily Arnold, a senior studying International Business in Zagreb can relate to this. Moving from Wisconsin, USA, to Croatia, she knows how big of a change this brings.
We recently had the pleasure of inviting Assistant Professor Igor Štimac, Ph.D., IAP, AvMP to hold a presentation about the “Development of the Zagreb Airport… past - present - future” for RIT Croatia students in Zagreb. With over 15 years of experience in the field of airport operations and airport middle and top management, Mr.Štimac explained to our students about the development stage of the infrastructure and the specifics of the management systems at the Franjo Tuđman Airport.
The Beer Game, invented by Massachusetts Institute of Technology, stimulated the supply chain and our operations Management class had the opportunity to play it during one of their classes. The students were divided from roles such as store owner, wholesaler, distributor and producer. Every part of the supply chain ordered goods and had them delivered to its customers.
On November 15th, 2019 RIT students that are currently enrolled in the Operations Management course were invited to the Konzum Logistics and Distribution Center in Zagreb. Two groups of 40 students were organized to have a tour of the center. Mr. Adrian Alajkovic hosted us throughout our trip. Not only is Mr. Alajkovic an adjunct lecturer at RIT Croatia but he is also Supply Chain Planning and Inventory Mgmt Director at Konzum.
If you ask our HTM professors about the important of experiential learning, without a doubt they would all say that it is a fundamental way of grasping and enhancing the knowledge ant the know-how in today’s world. One professor that truly stands behind those words is most definitely our professor Milena Kužnin. It is her Negotiation and Conflict course that yielded yet another exciting project in this semester – the first ever Tigers Bazaar at RIT Croatia Dubrovnik campus.

Dr. Malar Hirudayraj is an Associate professor of Human Resource Development in the Saunders College of Business, RIT Rochester. She teaches courses such as Leading Change, Leading Innovation, Organization Development, Social Psychology for Service, Performance Analysis and Development, Workplace Diversity at the graduate level. Malar is interested in the changing nature of work and organizations and its implications for employees and organizations. She mainly study issues of diversity and inclusion and employability, especially that of disadvantaged populations.

Dr. Branko Mihaljević and Dr. Martin Žagar attended the 24th International HrOUG (Croatian Oracle User Group) Conference on October 16-17 in Rovinj and delivered a presentation with the title „Software Development in Java – Today and Tomorrow“ on behalf of HUJAK (Croatian Java User Group).
Since the dog therapy community service events held last academic year were so successful, Student Government members decided to motivate students at the Dubrovnik campus to gather around and pay another visit to Žarkovica Dog shelter on Saturday, October 19th.
RIT Croatia and A1 Hrvatska have signed a Memorandum of agreement yesterday at the Zagreb campus and announced the first project: RIT students from the Croatian and American campuses will develop a software solution for monitoring air pollution.
The third Family Feud quiz, organized by Eta Sigma Delta honorary society, was most certainly a fun way to finishing off with the previous working week. On Friday, October 18, over 35 students gathered at the Hilton Imperial Hotel in Dubrovnik to watch the clash of two students teams, one led by professor Besim Agušaj and the other led by professor Rebecca Charry, and this time the topic was EXCELLENCE - the 3rd pillar of Eta Sigma Delta society.

On October 1, 2019, students taking Scientific Inquiries in Environmental Sciences class at the Dubrovnik campus, as well as all others who wanted to join the, had a unique opportunity to listen to Dr. Saša Ceci, a part-time physicist at the Ruđer Bošković Institute, one of the authors and presenters of the HRT’s scientific show Third Element, Vice President of the Croatian Physical Society and the author of the book Blesimeter, among other things. Dr. Ceci engaged students in a very intriguing topic: “Who needs this popularization of science”.
On Saturday, September 21, 2019, as a part of marking the World Clean Up Day, the Green Sea Safari Association led another successful expedition of cleaning our sea and coastline.
Maja Vidović has been selected as the 2019 winner of the Kelley-Willits award for outstanding contribution to online programs at The School of Labor and Employment Relations with the Penn State University. The award is given annually to an instructor based both on their work teaching in the program as well as in recognition of their overall contribution to the School, their programs and students.

Excellence in Student Life Award was founded to honor students who present principles of engagement, scholarship, and leadership. The initiation for the award was created to inspire students and to achieve their goals in all three categories.
It is one thing to learn about theories and business principles in a book, but it is another thing to see everything you have learned throughout your studies come to life! The Business Environment Exploration (BEE) club has one main goal, which is to provide students with the opportunity to travel to different cities and visit companies within those cities.
As the year draws to a close, we send off the graduating Class of 2019 into the next chapter in their lives. Throughout their four years with us, they have grown tremendously and are prepared as well as eager to see what the future awaits.

GRADUATING SENIORS PRESENT ORIGINAL RESEARCH IN HOSPITALITY, TOURISM AND BUSINESS
Helping a son or daughter choose a college is one of the most important, and most challenging tasks that any parent faces. Of course, all parents want the best for their children, but sometimes it’s hard to know in advance exactly what the best choice would be. We talked to parents of two RIT Croatia freshman students, who shared their thoughts on their children’s college choice
RIT reports that this year, more students will graduate from RIT’s international campuses than ever before. RIT’s campuses in China, Croatia, Dubai and Kosovo are expected to award degrees to more than 500 students, up from 369 degrees granted in 2017-18.
Each year, about 30 percent of our students come from outside Croatia. Our international students bring a variety of cultural experiences, styles, languages and customs that make our learning community more interesting and diverse.
Further to the visit of our colleagues from Rochester regarding the Manuscript project, Ms. Tania Kleynhans presented a paper on the topic “Technology to Preserve Dubrovnik’s Cultural Heritage” at the Techne Summit that was held in Dubrovnik on May 4 and 5.
Career Education Day is among the most important happenings in RIT Croatia academic calendar. It is a “class outside class” networking and learning opportunity for many of our stakeholders – from students, to companies and employers, our faculty and staff, and – our alumni!
This year, the RIT Venture Capital Fund in cooperation with RIT’s Simone Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, chose 16 students through a highly competitive process to attend a 3-day workshop on venture capital investing in Sunnyvale, California.
On April 25th, our freshman student, Angel Hristov, a long term employee of AIDA Cruises, organized a guided tour of the AIDAblu cruise ship on a regular visit to Dubrovnik for three other students of his generation, Kaitlin D'Costa, Tetiana Kulbaka and Ante Cvitković, who were joined by prof. Domagoj Nikolić.
From April 8 to April 11 prof. Branko Mihaljević and prof. Martin Žagar were visiting RIT Dubai campus and IEEE EDUCON conference 2019 where they presented a research paper in collaboration with prof. Steve Zilora from our main campus entitled “International student cooperation in Capstone research project”.
Faculty exchange between RIT campuses continues, and last week it was professor Milena kužnin’s turn to visit the Rochester campus and continue the fruitful cooperation between HTM departments in Rochester and Dubrovnik.
Recipients of the Outstanding Undergraduate Scholar Award are RIT students who have completed over 83 credit hours of study and have an established cumulative grade point average of 3.85 in the previous semester. Alongside that, this award given to students is a strong reminder that hard work is always praised and never unnoticed.
After the successful Round 1 that took place in March, Eta Sigma Delta honor society organized yet another Family Feud quiz, this time on the topic of “Leadership”.
It was a long weekend full of anticipation for participants of the 5th Hackathon Dubrovnik organized by DURA Agency in partnership with RIT Croatia and University of Dubrovnik.
This week, our HTM department had the honor of hosting Dr. Muhammet Kesgin, assistant professor from the HTM Rochester main campus. Dr Kesgin is the first in line of planned HTM faculty exchange between campuses and during his stay in Dubrovnik he visited several classes and delivered a couple of lectures to our Dubrovnik campus students in courses such as Food and Travel and Assessing and Improving Service Quality.
Stefano Filimonović, one of our IB students at the Zagreb campus, had a fantastic chance to be a part of a group of sixteen RIT students who traveled to Silicon Valley during spring break for the inaugural Venture Fund Capital Forum.
On April 9th Ms. Anja Marković, Executive Director of the Association for Civil Society Bonsai from Dubrovnik, honored us once again as the guest speaker in the Entrepreneurial Responsible Leadership course, taught by prof. Milena Kužnin.
Yet another year, yet another happening (or a competition if you will) our students are always interested in: Hackaton Dubrovnik! Over the past 5 years, our students have actively participated and achieving excellent results! And yes, they will be doing the same this year.
RIT Croatia juniors and seniors from the HTM program spent their Saturday, March 30th in Montenegro as they were hosted by two top class hospitality enterprises – Porto Montenegro and Luštica Bay. Due to the initiative of Dr. Besim Agušaj, professor and Area Head for the HTM program, both companies gladly opened their doors to RIT Croatia students and gave them the opportunity to take an in-depth (behind the scene) site tour in both places.

WINNERS OF RIT CROATIA’S ENGLISH LANGUAGE CONTEST 2019
First day of Spring marked another interested (and yummy) event at our Zagreb campus – the traditional International dinner which our students organize to promote the multicultural experience at RIT Croatia.
RIT Croatia Dubrovnik campus, in cooperation with Dubrovnik libraries, had the honor of hosting and organizing a series of lectures, a workshop and a roundtable discussion on the topic “Imaging a future for the past – uncovering lost text from manuscripts” that took place from March 18-20, 2019.
On March 5th and 7th, RIT Croatia honored 66 students from the Dubrovnik campus and 100 students from the Zagreb campus for achieving academic excellence. This year, the RIT Croatia students from the Dubrovnik campus celebrated at Lalezar Restaurant in Hotel Libertas Rixos and Zagreb students enjoyed their night at Restaurant Lido!

Dean's List is a superior academic achievement for all RIT Croatia students who obtain GPA 3.4 or higher and every semester, a special dinner is organized in order to celebrate this success. Having the Dean's List status is an indicator of hard work as a result of a long-term dedication and continuous learning, but also a motivation to continue pursuing that hard work.
It took 3 months of intensive preparation; blood, sweat and tears went into organizing this event, and the grand finale justified all of our expectations – “Dinburger ChaRITy Evening” that took place in Hilton Imperial turned out to be excellent in all aspects.

Rochester Institute of Technology believes that it is absolutely essential to award their students for their exemplary academic achievements. Every year RIT commemorates these students by honoring them through the Outstanding Scholar Award. This award recognizes the 1% of undergraduate students that were able to achieve a grade point average of 3.85 during their 4 year undergraduate program.
The 4th Dubrovnik Hackathon took place at Hotel Royal Princess in Dubrovnik from April 14-15, organized by DURA Agency, with the support of RIT Croatia and University of Dubrovnik.
In April 2018, BEE Club took students to Bratislava to meet International Business Machine (IBM), accompanied by professor Jesus Cazares. We were very well welcomed to their company where they offered coffee and sandwiches for all of our tired students after the 7 hour trip.
Our annual Community Service Day at the Dubrovnik campus was held this Friday, April 13. Freshmen students, mentored by prof. Rebecca Charry, decided to dedicate their time and efforts for the benefit of residents of the "Centar za rehabilitaciju" Josipovac nearby Dubrovnik.
In order to recognize its student helpers and thus mark the student employment week, RIT Croatia organized a pizza get-together for 61 student helpers in both campuses. Aside from their studies, these students are very active in undertaking activities in various areas – from tutoring and working in the library, to conducting diverse communication activities by writing stories or even making videos about RIT Croatia!

18 years ago RIT Croatia (ACMT at that time) pioneered with the Career Education day concept in the immediate region. Focused on preparing students for future careers, ACMT came up with a platform to help them connect and network with their (future) employers. 2018. was a record year – we've had over 1,000 participants and 73 companies on both of our CED events!
On March 29, Dubrovnik campus students who are taking the Intercultural Communication class, taught by prof. Francis Brassard, had the opportunity to listen to a guest lecture on the topic of “Soft Power”, delivered by Mr. Barry Tomalin, an international business consultant, specializing in international communication and cultural awareness.
Head of Economic Research Department of Erste&Steiermärkische Bank Alen Kovač visited our Zagreb campus and talked to our students about the economic development of Croatia, its position in the region and in the EU; he focused on the causes and effect of economic growth, as well as impact of fiscal and monetary policy.
On March 23rd, we had the pleasure of hosting around 35 students from Privatna Gimnazija Dubrovnik (1st and 3rd year), who came to attend workshops accompanied by two of their professors.
English Language Contest is a competition in English language and presentation skills our college organizes on yearly basis, with the aim to award the best participants with valuable scholarships. Scholarships are nonrefundable and can only be used to enroll in undergraduate programs at RIT Croatia
On, Tuesday, March 27th RIT Croatia Dubrovnik campus was honored to host Ms. Ashely Colburn from Ashley Colburn Productions. Ms. Colburn was invited by our Career Services Office to give lecture about "Finding the Wonder in the World." The lecture was done as a part of the freshman year Intercultural Communication class, co-taught by professors Zrinka Friganović Sain and Francis Brassard.

First day of Spring marked another interested (and yummy) event at our Zagreb campus – the traditional International dinner which our students organize to promote the multicultural experience at RIT Croatia. This year's event gathered more than 100 students presenting and tasting various dishes from countries such as Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria and Russia.
Each year, our Freshmen students research the local causes in their respective communities that need help and support. Then they choose a cause and organize a Community Service Day to support it.
As part of HTM Guest lecture series, professor Besim Agušaj and his group of students from the Business Continuity and Crisis Management course had the opportunity to listen to a lecture on the topic of “Crisis Management”, delivered by Mr. Goran Pulig, Deputy Security, Safety and Quality Manager from Dubrovnik Airport. The lecture was held on March 22 at the premises of Dubrovnik Airport.

On February 17th, Zagreb hosted the 5th International Java community conference in Croatia. Organized by Croatian Java User Association (HUJAK), this evet has grown into one of the biggest Java community conferences in this part of Europe. HUJAK’s intention with the conference is to “present a variety of topics interesting to a wide range of attendees and to encourage an exchange of experiences as well as establish firmer connections inside the community sharing similar interests”. So, this year Javantura gathered 300 participants and hosted 25 sessions.

On February 22, the Dubrovnik campus of RIT Croatia had the pleasure of hosting Mr. Robert Kohorst, the new US Ambassador in Croatia. Ambassador Kohorst took up this position on January 10, 2018 and this is his first visit to Dubrovnik since his official arrival to Croatia.
On Friday, February 16, professor Domagoj Nikolić, who is teaching courses at the HTM program in Dubrovnik, held a presentation of the research he conducted with the Super Brain Research Group, an international scientific organization using advanced technologies for the exploration of ancient sites.
Yesterday, February 12, Dubrovnik campus had the pleasure of hosting Ms. Jadranka Boban Pejić, the founder and director of Biovega, the leading organic food producer in Croatia. Ms. Boban Pejić is an award-winning entrepreneur and the most successful manager in Croatia in the "Green Economy" field.

Eta Sigma Delta Honorary Society at RIT Croatia celebrated its second year of existence by inducting 12 new members! On December 7, 2017, the induction ceremony took place at the Rixos Libertas Hotel in Dubrovnik.

Our 7th IT guest lecture at the Dubrovnik campus was held on Monday, November 13th. We were honored to host Mr. Thomas Cashman, Senior Software Engineer from Ireland based company called Cellusys that has offices in UAE, Germany, Spain, USA, Thailand and recently Croatia.
On November 10th, the IT students at the Dubrovnik campus had the opportunity to attend the guest lecture held by Mr. Aleksandar Radovan, who is the Java team leader at KING ICT, Software Architect, a member of HUJAK organization and one of IT professors at RIT Croatia.
